- This guide
Step 1: Choose your style, setup and size
There's no standard washer and dryer size, but here's what's typical for each style and setup, rounded up to the next inch:
Standard side-by-side pairs
For standard pairs, you'll need a space about 40" high x 56" wide x 31–34" deep. You can also add washer dryer pedestals to front load washers and dryers to load and unload without bending down, which can increase height by about 15 inches.
Stacked pairs and laundry centers
Many front load washers and dryers can be stacked, a good option when you have more vertical than horizontal space. For full-size stackable washer and dryers, you'll typically need a space that's 80" high x 28" wide x 31-34" deep. You may also consider a stacked laundry center at 74-76" high x 24-28" wide x 27-33" deep.
Small space pairs
Whether you stack or put your small space washer and dryer side-by-side, they're designed to fit into closets, apartments and small homes. For side-by-side small space pairs, you'll need a space that's about 34" high x 48" wide x 24-25" deep, while for stacked pairs you'll need approximately 68" high x 24" wide x 24-25" deep.
Step 2: Add space for easy use
In order to fit and function properly, your washer and dryer need a little breathing room.
In front
Add about 4 feet to load and unload. If installing in a closet, make sure that the unit doors clear the closet doorway.
Behind
Add around 6 inches for hoses and venting.
Above
Add extra space for easy opening and closing.
Buffer space
Minimize noise by adding an inch on the top, sides and between units.
Step 3: Map out a path
Figure out the best path of entry to your desired installation location, beginning at your home entrance and taking into account each hall and doorway. Then measure the width of those spaces to ensure the unit will make it through.
